Silkwork Sampler by Rachel Whitaker 1823
“This I have done that you may see what care my parents took of me”. Eleven year old Rachel Whitaker used this popular verse on her sampler which she completed in 1823, and also included alphabets, numbers, baskets of fruit and flowers, stars, hearts and coronets, a little dog and a bird, all contained within a charming meandering border.
Probably Glamorganshire according to family tradition.
The very finely figured, broad rosewood frame whilst not original is contemporary and the sampler has been rebacked using acid -free board.
Dimensions: 44 x 46.5 cms high.
